Overview

The shortest and steepest route to the top. Umbwe climbs a narrow forest ridge straight up to the Barranco Valley, then joins the southern circuit. Quiet and dramatic, but the fast ascent gives little time to acclimatise, so we only recommend it for experienced, already-acclimatised climbers.

Best for: Experienced mountaineers who have recently been at altitude (for example after Mount Meru).
